Golf DataTech’s National Golf Rounds Played Report has been released for the month of December and 2020 overall.

Golf in Ohio and around the country was up big last season compared to 2019. Ohio saw a 14% rounds played increase in 2020, while the nation as a whole saw a similar increase of 13.9%.

A major turn-around this is. In April (post-shutdown), rounds nationally were down 15.6% and as much as 31% statewide.

The best month comparatively for the Buckeye State came in November 2020, when there was an outstanding 218% increase in rounds played.

Interestingly, private access courses nationwide saw the biggest boost in 2020. Private clubs registered a 20% increase, while public access courses only notched a 12.4% boost from 2019.

The biggest statewide increases came in the Central part of the United States. Iowa/Missouri, Oklahoma, and the Dakotas clocked in with 24% increases in 2020.

Only 3 of 50 states nationally saw their rounds played figures drop from 2019 to 2020, and understandingly so, as they were each golf travel destinations. Hawaii dropped 32%, while Nevada came down 3%, and South Carolina at -0.2%.

In the surrounding area, results varied. Indiana was up 23.5% YTD, while Michigan was only up 7% YTD.

In Ohio, weather does indeed buck its head during the winter months, as Cincinnati rounds played were up 29% in December 2020, while Cleveland area courses came in at 26% below their December 2019 mark.

It will be interesting to see if the buzz continues into the year of 2021, however, the importance of good weather locally will determine much of that fate.
