New Albany ’22 Kary Hollenbaugh’s day at the Lady Elk Invite started like a lot of normal golfers, with a bogey on her first hole.

However, Kary Hollenbaugh isn’t normal.

The New Albany girls golf standout followed it up with a hole-in-one on the par 3 12th hole, the first ace of her career. Two consecutive birdies after that sent her on her way to one of the lowest rounds you will ever see from a high school golfer, a 12-under 60.

There isn’t great record-keeping for golf outside of the state tournament, so it’s hard to know what kind of records this set. However, this is the lowest round I can remember in OHSAA golf since 2013.

Toledo St. Ursula’s Lily Rinker carded a 62 in 2017 at White Pines. On the boys side, East Knox’s Drew Salyers shot a 62 at Chapel Hill in 2019. Hollenbaugh happened to have one of those previous low rounds, as she shot a 9-under 63 last August at Jefferson.

New Albany’s team score at the Lady Elk Invite was indeed good enough for a school record, in relation to par. A 275 (-13), was also helped out by a 4-under 68 from Anna Ritter.

Hollenbaugh will continue her golf and academic career at Ohio State. She also plays tennis for New Albany HS, which is during the same season as golf. Hollenbaugh and some of her senior classmates, including Illinois commit Anna Ritter, are looking to win their fourth consecutive OHSAA state girls golf title.
